Coconut shell activated carbon for seawater desalination

Coconut shell activated carbon has significant applications in seawater desalination projects. Coconut shell activated carbon is a porous adsorption material made from high-quality coconut shells through processes such as high-temperature activation and carbonization. It has a well-developed pore structure and a large specific surface area, which gives it a strong adsorption capacity.

In the seawater desalination project, coconut shell activated carbon mainly plays the role of adsorption. Seawater contains various impurities, including salts, microorganisms, organic substances and harmful substances, etc. The microporous structure of coconut shell activated carbon can effectively adsorb these impurities. The diameters of its micropores are mostly below 2 nm, and this small pore diameter structure has a strong affinity for small molecule impurities. For example, for some organic pollutants in seawater, such as benzene series and halogenated hydrocarbons, coconut shell activated carbon can fix them in the pores through physical adsorptio.

In terms of salt removal, although coconut shell activated carbon cannot directly reduce the salt content in seawater to a level suitable for direct drinking, it can be used as part of the pre-treatment or post-treatment process. In the pre-treatment stage, it can adsorb some dissolved organic substances and colloidal substances in seawater, reducing the membrane contamination in subsequent desalination processes such as reverse osmosis, prolonging the membrane's service life, and improving the desalination efficiency. In the post-treatment stage, it can further remove the trace organic substances and odor substances remaining in the water after reverse osmosis treatment, improving the water quality and taste.

For microorganisms in seawater, the adsorption effect of coconut shell activated carbon can reduce the number of microorganisms and lower the risk of biological contamination. At the same time, it can also adsorb some harmful substances such as heavy metal ions, ensuring the safety of desalinated water.

In terms of industry standards, coconut shell activated carbon used in seawater desalination projects needs to meet certain quality standards. For example, the iodine adsorption value should reach a relatively high level, generally requiring above 900mg/g, which reflects the size of its adsorption capacity. In addition, strength is also an important indicator. Strong coconut shell activated carbon is less likely to break during use, which can ensure the stability of the adsorption effect.

Activated carbon, with its well-developed pore structure and huge specific surface area, utilizes the principles of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption to adsorb various pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), malodorous gases, and other contaminants in industrial exhaust gases. It plays a crucial role in the purification of industrial exhaust gases. It can effectively remove harmful gases like formaldehyde and benzene, has high purification efficiency, and is suitable for handling large volume and low-concentration exhaust gases. It is often used in combination with other treatment technologies to enhance efficiency.
