What are the uses of coke?

Coke is a high-calorific solid fuel that is widely used in various fields such as metallurgy, chemical industry, building materials, light industry, and energy. Depending on its application and properties, the uses of coke can be classified as follows:

1. Metallurgical Industry:

Coke is one of the most important raw materials in the processes of iron smelting and steelmaking. In the blast furnace iron smelting process, coke acts as a reducing agent and reacts with iron ore, resulting in a series of chemical reactions that reduce the iron oxides in the iron ore to metallic iron. At the same time, the high calorific value of coke provides the necessary heat energy for the blast furnace. In the oxygen converter steelmaking process, coke is used as a reducing agent and fuel, which oxidizes and removes impurities in pig iron, while providing heat energy to maintain the progress of the blast furnace reaction.

2. Chemical Industry:

Coal is widely used in the chemical industry. It can be used as a raw material for coke ovens to produce organic chemical raw materials such as tar, benzene, and methanol. Tar is a by-product of the coke-making process and can be used to produce synthetic resins, dyes, rubber preservatives, etc. Benzene is an important chemical raw material and is widely used in the synthesis of plastics, synthetic fibers, and the pharmaceutical industry. Methanol is an important chemical raw material and fuel. Coal serves as an important reducing agent in the production of methanol, which is synthesized through gas-phase steam method or gasification method.

3. Construction Materials Industry:

In the construction materials industry, coke is mainly used for the production of ferroalloys and refractory materials. Ferroalloys are an important type of alloy material, which are used to improve the properties of steel. Coke acts as a reducing agent, enabling the removal of impurities in ferroalloys. Refractory materials are mainly composed of oxides, silicates, nitrides, etc. Coke serves as the main fuel and reducing agent. Can provide the required heat energy at high temperatures.

4. Light Industry:

In the light industry sector, coke is mainly utilized for the production of carbon black and activated carbon. Carbon black is an essential industrial raw material, which can be used in the production of rubber, plastics, inks, pigments, etc. Activated carbon is an adsorbent with high porosity and adsorption capacity, and is widely applied in water treatment, air purification, and industrial waste gas treatment, among other fields.

5. Energy Utilization:

Coke, as a high-calorific solid fuel, can also be utilized for energy purposes. It can be directly burned in industrial furnaces and household heating stoves to provide heat for heating and domestic water supply. Additionally, coke can be mixed with coal powder for combustion, which is used for power generation and heat supply.

In conclusion, coke, as an important solid fuel, has a wide range of applications and diversification, covering various industries such as metallurgy, chemical industry, building materials, light industry, and energy. With the development of industrialization and the enhancement of environmental awareness, the requirements for coke quality have become increasingly strict, which has driven the continuous improvement of coke production technology and enhanced product quality and utilization efficiency.
